More Than Three Tonnes of Waste Removed from the Croatian Seabed During the Two-Day Eco Action Initiative on Lošinj

During the two-day eco initiative “The Sea Knows, the Island Never Forgets”, held on Lošinj on April 5th and 6th, 2025, a total of 3,260 kg of waste was removed from the island's seabed through the combined efforts of 224 divers, volunteers, and community members.

Responding to the call of the diving centre SUBSEASON and the Blue World Institute, 106 divers from various visiting and local diving clubs joined the clean-up, including participants from Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Germany. Hundreds of volunteers, visitors, and locals also took part in the clean-up across multiple locations: the port of Mali Lošinj, the small harbours of Biskupija and Ufratar in Nerezine, the port of Susak, and Silver Bay in the Čikat area.

“As organisers of this major initiative, we at the Blue World Institute are incredibly proud to see how this project continues to grow each year, expanding to neighbouring locations throughout our archipelago. More and more individuals, both divers and on-land volunteers, as well as local businesses and institutions, are getting involved in organising and supporting the effort. Everyone is eager to participate and make a difference. It's a shining example of community cooperation and environmental awareness, and we hope it will inspire similar actions across the Adriatic,” said Jelena Basta, President of the Blue World Institute.

The event is part of the European Commission's “European Maritime Day in My Country” campaign, which promotes ocean conservation and sustainable blue economy practices. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of our seas and oceans, especially among young people, and to encourage public involvement in their protection.

Sustainability has long been a cornerstone of how Jadranka turizam d.o.o. do business and is an ongoing commitment we continue to strengthen through concrete environmental actions. “We support this initiative because we believe everyone can play a role in preserving the marine ecosystem, whether through education, changing daily habits, or taking part in clean-up efforts like this one,” commented Ante Vranješ, Executive Director of Corporate Functions and ESG at Jadranka turizam d.o.o. “Together, we are making Lošinj even more beautiful and sustainable for generations to come.”

Thanks to the dedication of everyone involved, this year's action once again demonstrated the sheer value of preserving Lošinj's natural beauty. Already the recipient of the prestigious International Green Destinations – Gold Award in the field of sustainable development and responsible tourism by Green Destinations, Lošinj continues to invest in education, awareness, and hands-on environmental initiatives that contribute to nature protection.

“We are grateful to all those who joined this important initiative, from divers and volunteers to all the organizations and partners involved. Through our collective efforts, we've taken another step towards a cleaner and healthier marine environment, which is something we can all be proud of, now and for future generations,” said Dalibor Cvitković, Director of the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board.

The clean-up is organised by the Blue World Institute and SUBSEASON Diving Centre, with the support of the town of Mali Lošinj, the Mali Lošinj Tourist Board, Lošinj Hotels & Villas, Jadranka turizam – Jadranka Camps, Jadranka Stores, Cres-Lošinj Municipal Services, the County Port Authority of Mali Lošinj, the Lošinj Museum, Top Dive Diving Center, the Port Authority of Mali Lošinj, A. Haračić Secondary School, the Community Service Centre of Mali Lošinj, Lošinj Usluga, local sport fishing associations, various clubs and NGOs. The initiative is also supported by Večernji list's “Earth Resolution” campaign.
