Icehotel opens application for the international design competition on its 35th anniversary
The application process is now open for creative individuals to participate in the creation of Icehotel 35 as part of this year's design competition. Icehotel is world-renowned for being a unique fusion of art and design in ice and snow, and every year, Icehotel is recreated in an entirely new form. Unique artworks that only exist once. The deadline for submitting the design contribution to Icehotel 35 is April 15, 2024. Icehotel was founded in 1989, and in addition to being a unique hotel, it is also a living exhibition with art created from ice and snow. The hotel, rebuilt every year using ice from the Torne River, becomes an extraordinary combination of sculptures, art suites, main hall and a ceremonial hall. Preparations for Icehotel's 35th anniversary have begun, and the application is now open for the annual design competition. Talented artists worldwide can create their own dream suites from organic materials that change according to the season. The selected designs will be chosen on creativity, innovation, and feasibility – and, of course, on the experience provided to the guest. Participating artists can let innovation and creativity thrive, creating a memorable experience for visitors from around the world. – Each ice block borrowed from the Torne River carries its own unique story. Icehotel is a vibrant space where our artists have the opportunity to create powerful ice art in a unique environment. I look forward to this year's innovative ideas for Icehotel 35, says Luca Roncoroni, Creative Director Icehotel. The production of Icehotel is organized as an international project where selected artists gather in Jukkasjärvi to build original and magnificent suites. Icehotel represents an artistic achievement and a tribute to nature and the last untouched watercourse in Sweden, the Torne River. It is an opportunity for artists to create something extraordinary and for visitors to experience a unique artistic world crafted by the beauty of ice. – We are so excited as we begin planning for Icehotel 35, this half-century celebration at 35 years old. We look forward to creative, exciting, and innovative proposals for art suites, and we can promise our guests several entirely new experiences during their visits next winter, says Marie Herrey, CEO Icehotel. Icehotel is a unique art concept that over the years has been created by award-winning designers and artists such as Bernadotte & Kylberg, winners of several international design awards such as the prestigious Red Dot Award, the design duo Kauppi & Kauppi who has won countless awards worldwide for their furniture and their lighting, and French Nicolas Triboulot & Fernand Manzi who work daily with designing crystal vases in Paris. Icehotel has also had art suites designed by tomorrow's artists and ceramists, students from Leksands Folkhögskola.  Application and deadline While previous experience sculpting ice, snow or other materials is an advantage, Icehotel also welcomes applications from all creative disciplines. The selection of the winning entries is based on their concept, creativity, innovation, feasibility, and of course, on experience provided to visitors and guests. The Artists are responsible for completing their suites at Icehotel, but there is a support team that can assist them and a lighting team that develops a lighting plan in collaboration with the artists. The application is open until Monday, 15 April 2024, and the winning concepts will be announced on Monday, 29 April 2024. The Balmoral's concierge reveals Edinburgh's most haunted places to visit ahead of Halloween
Secrets of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile Walking Tour (12-minute walk from The Balmoral) Scotland is renowned for its storytelling, which is a vital part of the country's tradition and history. The Secrets of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile takes guests on a journey through time, unveiling fascinating secrets behind Edinburgh’s famous, historic Old Town. Through stories told by the expert guides, guests can learn all about Edinburgh’s residents from past generations and historical figures, such as Mary Queen of Scots and Robert Burns.   Underground City of the Dead (7 minute walk from The Balmoral) During The Underground City of the Dead tour, guests can venture into the most haunted section of Edinburgh’s Underground City, where a population once lived. Pitch black and filled with incredible history, these vaults were forgotten for centuries and only recently unsealed. Underground City of the Dead is researched and written by the award winning novelist and historical author, Jan-Andrew Henderson. The story of this hidden metropolis is told in his book The Town Below the Ground.   Hidden & Haunted (9 minute walk from The Balmoral) During the Hidden and Haunted ghost tour, guests are taken on a dark and eerie journey through Old Town’s sinister wynds and closes before descending into the haunted Blair Street Underground Vaults. During the tour tales, which are described as not fit for the glare of daylight, will be told – perhaps what’s spookiest of all, is that these twisted tales of history are all true stories. The ghost tour begins above ground, before making its way along the city’s narrow cobble-stone streets where murders, misdeeds and mischief once took place before entering the haunted vaults buried beneath ground.   Fright Night Tour (7 minute walk from The Balmoral) The evening walking tour begins on the Royal Mile, where visitors are introduced to a costumed guide. The guide then reveals their identity which can be an unscrupulous surgeon or a misunderstood witch. Whatever their identity, they are filled with stories which will be told as visitors traverse the High Street, leaving behind the comforting streetlight to enter Greyfriars cemetery, one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh.   The Double Dead Tour (8 minute walk from The Balmoral) This tour ventures into the South Bridge Vaults and the Covenanter’s Prison in Greyfriars Graveyard, where the infamous Mackenzie Poltergeist lives. An encounter with the poltergeist is the highlight of the tour, with hundreds of people claiming to have been attacked by the entity.  The MacKenzie Poltergeist is renowned as the best-documented supernatural case of all time, with it being the subject of books as well as television documentaries and newspaper articles.   Extreme Paranormal Underground Ghost Tour (9-minute walk from The Balmoral) The Extreme Paranormal Underground Ghost Tour was created for those who are extremely brave. During the tour, visitors will explore some of Edinburgh’s most haunted locations both above and underground. Begin by visiting old wynds which lead to one of the world’s most haunted graveyards, along the way ghost stories about terrifying tales of hangings, torture, murders and witches, will be told. The Balmoral, the iconic Edinburgh hotel that first opened its doors in 1902, is filled with over a century of stories, making it the perfect place to stay this Halloween. The Balmoral is within walking distance of ghost tours and haunted locations, guests can spend their days and nights exploring the historical spots of Scotland’s capital before relaxing in the comfort of the hotel, ready to dissect and review the city’s terrifying mysteries.

The unique journey started with a healthy snacks workshop at Umami restaurant, following a self-pampering class at LUX* ME Spa and an island tour. After an engaging Maldivian cooking class at the resort’s Herb Garden, the quest concluded with a celebration ceremony and symbolic presentation of the Extraordinary Women certification. With special gifts from the resort collected during the quest, the participants will be able to continue new self-care practices back at home. “Every year, we inviteinspiring women from different industries across the country to celebrate their successes. From running a small business, teaching art, or rocking the corporate world, we want to appreciate their contribution, which is very valuable to the Maldives. We find it truly beautiful that both local and expat ladies from many nationalities call the islands their home and work together to make the Maldives shine”, said Anastasiya Babenko, Marketing & PR Manager of LUX* South Ari Atoll. The Lux Collective proudly supports women in their professional and personal growth, empowering them to excel. Recently accredited as the Great Place to Work, the group firmly believes in the importance of inclusion and emphasises #EmbraceEquity, thereby discovering and nurturing talented women leaders across different departments and levels wherever it operates globally.
