Leading the way in sustainability leadership, The Lux Collective is the first luxury hospitality group in Mauritius to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the NGO Eco-Sud to establish a conservation plan for marine biodiversity. Commemorating the World Environment Day and World Oceans Day this June, the partnership signed on 8 June 2023 aims to raise awareness among a wider audience about the importance of oceans and promote sustainable and environmental-friendly practices to protect marine ecosystems.
Aligning with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #14, which is to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources, turtle-friendly habitats will be developed on the beaches of the Group's six hotels in Mauritius, namely LUX* Grand Baie, LUX* Belle Mare, LUX* Le Morne, LUX* Grand Gaube, Tamassa Bel Ombre and SALT of Palmar.
Oceans are the key source of life. Producing at least 50% of the oxygen for breathing, they are an important source of food and medicine, protect humans from climate change, and absorb about 30% of global CO2 emissions. The oceans are in great danger due to overfishing and pollution. It is imperative to protect them, as the survival of all species depends on their preservation.
"In Mauritius, we are fortunate to be an island destination: our beaches are easily accessible, making it easier to implement initiatives to protect our marine ecosystem. However, this is a concern that affects us all, in every corner of the world. And everyone can contribute by reducing overconsumption and eradicating pollution. Our oceans face many threats, and their good health ensures the proper balance of life on Earth, even human survival. That is why we must mobilise. Let's work on solutions to combat the degradation of the oceans. We would like to thank Eco-Sud for allowing us to be a part of this noble project," emphasised Ms Evita Fakun, Chief Sustainability Officer of The Lux Collective.
"For over 23 years, the Eco-Sud association has existed thanks to the determination of the residents of Blue Bay to protect the marine park and biodiversity found there. Today, the collaboration established between The Lux Collective and Eco-Sud clearly demonstrates that it is worthy standing up for our natural heritage. The urgency to change our relationship with nature is very real. Species extinction, the environmental and climate crisis present us with a challenge that we must face together, without compromising our values!" said Sébastien Sauvage, Chief Executive Officer of Eco-Sud.
A series of initiatives and activities adapted to each hotel will be implemented under this agreement. These include awareness campaigns, workshops for students, the promotion of ecotourism, and fundraising for blue carbon projects encompassing mangrove reforestation, coral nurseries establishment, oyster cultivation, seagrass meadow preservation and other impactful endeavours.
The Lux Collective and its resorts also regularly welcome marine biology experts to study the lagoons and provide recommendations for blue carbon projects’ implementation - aimed at restoring biodiversity. Exhibitions will be organised to showcase the blue carbon projects.
Fishing communities in the regions where the Group's hotels operate will have access to training in ethical fishing provided by Eco-Sud, and will be integrated into the resorts' sustainable supply chains. Interactive workshops will be organised to educate children and involve them in marine conservation activities, creating a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the environment.
Additionally, individuals will have the opportunity to contribute to data collection during their dives around the island by sharing images and geolocations with the NGO. It is important to note that the hawksbill turtle is an endangered species. Despite the observation of specimens in Mauritian waters, it is difficult to confirm the status of their population due to the lack of nesting attempts. So far, only 20,000 females have been successfully identified and tracked worldwide!
To this end, collective action is crucial because when it comes to environmental protection, unity is strength! With this in mind, The Lux Collective and the NGO Eco-Sud aim to rally the world on ocean and climate action in countries where the Group is operating, one country at a time.

The Danish Crown Princess Mary Elizabeth attended the country for her first official visit. She shared Fiji's progress in this area, from introducing eco-friendly practices in resorts to supporting local conservation efforts. The conversation also shed light on the challenges Fiji faces in achieving sustainable tourism, such as the need for continued education and collaboration with industry partners.
Fiji Airways also hosted the royal attendee as the honourable participant of the mangrove planting, one of the initiatives to protect the natural habitat of the islands.
Tourism Fiji’s Sustainability Officer Sunishma Singh had the privilege of meeting with the Her Royal Highness, to discuss the vital importance of sustainability in the tourism industry. Hilton properties in Fiji, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa and DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Hotel Fiji, Sonaisali Island, have partnered with Fiji Chemicals to launch Glass Crushing for Bricks that will directly tackle shared social environmental challenges.
Launched on Denarau Island in recognition of Earth Week, Hilton Fiji properties organized activities during the week that entailed several eco-friendly initiatives, including recycling, reducing wastage, promoting sustainability and giving back to the community.
Glass Crushing for Bricks as the name suggests, utilises glass crushings to make bricks. The goal of the program is to reduce waste and environmental impact while creating an eco-friendly building material. The process of glass crushing for bricks involves finely crushing waste glass and mixing it into a cement mixture for use in construction. The resulting material is durable, cost-effective, and provides a unique design aesthetic.
Under this partnership, Hilton properties in Fiji will work with Fiji Chemicals to collect and transport waste glass from its resorts to Fiji Chemicals' facility for processing. The processed and refined glass bricks will then be distributed to identified communities for use in construction and other projects.
"We are thrilled to partner with Fiji Chemicals on this innovative waste reduction initiative and be the first hotel company in Fiji to launch this program," said Carey Osborne, cluster general manager – Hilton Fiji. "As leaders in the tourism industry, it is our responsibility to take a proactive approach towards sustainability. This project demonstrates our commitment to reducing our environmental impact while also giving back a unique and eco-friendly brick material to our communities for community projects."
Fiji Chemicals, a leading local manufacturer and supplier of quality cleaning products in Fiji, is proud to be part of this initiative. "We are always excited to have the opportunity to work with Hilton properties in Fiji by reducing waste and contributing to a more sustainable future," said Darren Bentley-Fisher, managing director of Fiji Chemicals. "This initiative is another huge win, not only for Hilton Fiji properties and Fiji Chemicals but more importantly for the environment and our local community."
Glass Crushing for Bricks will now join a list of Travel with Purpose sustainability efforts underway at Hilton properties in Fiji, which includes Diversey's Soap for Hope™, Linens for Life™ and Coffee Briques™ programs. In celebrating Earth Week, the properties reduced wastage and promoted sustainable practices with activities such as a ‘no bin day’ at the resorts’ cafeterias to target zero wastage in meals, kids club activities’ with recycled materials for arts and crafts, and a team member ‘Master Chef mystery box competition’ using local produce. Additionally, the resorts also ran a departmental 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) decoration competition to encourage team members to reduce wastage, recycle products, and re-use items. The week-long activities ended with a ‘meals on wheels’ initiative where volunteers from each resort distributed cooked meals to the displaced along the Nadi town to Lautoka corridor.
Tourism Fiji proudly announced their membership with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) last month, which establishes and manages global sustainability standards in order to protect and sustain the world’s natural and cultural resources. By joining the GSTC, Tourism Fiji and its industry partners have made a commitment to work towards a more sustainable future for the islands. With a variety of initiatives aimed at promoting awareness, driving positive impact and encouraging visitor participation, the industry is committed to safeguarding Fiji's invaluable natural resources for future generations through these collaborative endeavors. Home to a pristine natural environment, including some of the world’s largest coral reefs and a unique living culture, Fiji recognises the importance of sustainability and community engagement. Tourism Fiji is championing sustainable tourism practices that reduce the environmental impact of tourism by reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy efficiency, and conserving water and natural resources. Resorts and tour operators across Fiji are helping to future-proof the industry by greening their operations and supporting conservation and community initiatives. “We are proud to be among leading tourism destinations and companies around the world who have banded together to create a better future for travelers and local communities,” said the CEO of Tourism Fiji, Brent Hill. “We believe that sustainable tourism is the way forward and are committed to working with our industry partners to make this a reality.” Fiji’s resorts and tourism businesses are spearheading significant sustainability efforts that range from installing renewable energy sources like solar, going plastic free, reducing and managing waste and wastewater, to planting organic gardens and offsetting carbon footprint through mangrove planting. Other resorts and businesses are helping to preserve Fiji’s endangered and endemic species like iguanas and turtles, and conserving large swathes of reefs, forests and islands in protected areas.
Fiji’s resorts and tourism operators have launched an array of sustainability initiatives ahead of Earth Day (April 22) including:

David Gallienne, the head chef and owner of Le Jardin des Plumes, a one-Michelin-star restaurant in France’s Normandy region, will host two exclusive dinners at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi on Nov. 17-18.
In the first of these special meals, diners will experience a premium set menu spotlighting French gastronomy paired with Bollinger champagne on Nov. 17. This intimate Michelin-caliber meal will be available for 20 persons and served in the lovely glasshouse venue of L’Orangerie.
The next night, on Nov. 18, Chef Gallienne will serve an exclusive “Le Jardin des Plumes Michelin dinner” in the newly refurbished Le Beaulieu at Metropole Hanoi.
The winner of the popular reality TV show Top Chef France in 2020, Gallienne was born and raised in Le Mans, and has more than 15 years’ experience working in the kitchens of several Michelin-starred restaurants in Normandy, from Alençon to Rouen and Bagnols-de-L’orne.
In early 2020, he became the owner of the hotel and gourmet restaurant Le Jardin des Plumes, where he has served many prestigious guests including French President Emmanuel Macron and a former Japanese prime minister.
In love with his native region, Gallienne delights diners’ taste buds by proposing a cuisine inspired by the Normandy region, which he revisits with surprising flavors while also raising awareness about the wonders of nature, the natural rhythm of the seasons, and the work of local producers and artisan suppliers.

With an elegant and sophisticated new design, alongside renowned French gastronomy and a wide selection of wines, the signature restaurant at Metropole Hanoi ties together the hotel’s 120-year-old storied past with a contemporary new look that manages to meld the opulent, the classical and the modern in a single scheme that’s long on white, gold and heathery blue-grays.
Marking as a leader in sustainability, the property implemented six new sustainability features, receiving the eco-rating from Green Key Global.
The newly transformed Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel earned a 5 Key Eco-Rating from Green Key Global, marking the hotel as a leader in sustainability in the hospitality industry. To earn the rating, Sheraton met all five of Green Key Global’s pillars of sustainability, initiating several new sustainability practices, many of which directly resulted from the hotel's largest renovation in its 50-year history.
“We recognize that our sustainability efforts do much more than benefit our bottom line,” said Tim Reardon, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel General Manager. “They improve the quality of life for our community as well as our guests and employees.”
Green Key Global’s eco rating consists of five key pillars: Develop a sustainability policy, engage employees, hire green suppliers, measure and track progress, get certified by a third party. Sheraton Centre achieved all five pillars, led by Director of Engineering, Nabil Mansour. Mansour attributes this success to the guidance of Green Key Global.
“The hospitality industry has a lot of potential for growth in sustainability,” said Rebecca Bartlett-Jones, Manager of Business Development at Green Key Global. “Sheraton Centre Toronto is a pinnacle of sustainable accommodations, leading the way for our industry.”
One of Sheraton’s major initiatives which contributed to this certification is its partnership with suppliers like Lightenco. The seemingly simple act of switching from halogen to LED light bulbs reduced Sheraton’s annual electricity consumption by approximately 480,000 kWh and reduced its annual carbon footprint by more than 14,000 kg.
Another update in Sheraton’s suite of sustainable processes includes distilling all food waste into compost. The water released from the compressed food can be used for cleaning and watering plants, and the remaining, dry compost goes to local farms. Other sustainable adaptations Sheraton has made include recycling water where appropriate, installing a rooftop garden, installing high-efficiency LED lighting with smart technology in newly renovated areas and adding chiller plant manager to the building automation system.
Sheraton Centre Toronto joined Green Key Global in 2013 with the goal of reducing operating costs, carbon footprint and food waste. The result of Sheraton’s commitment to sustainability is receiving the 5 Eco-Rating from Green Key Global.

Eco-conscious weddings are on the rise as couples become more mindful of how their celebrations impact the environment. With travel restrictions easing and vaccinations available, many are buoyed by the prospect of celebrating their big day in far-flung, beautiful destinations, but with more intention and personalisation.
An island nation like Mauritius is ideal for a sustainable lifestyle, and what makes it even better is that going down the sustainable route does not mean sacrificing on quality. Hiring local is not only a great way to support the local community but also shine a spotlight on homegrown talents to sustain a circular economy.
Bespoke bridal gowns from repurposed fabrics
Meet Mauritian wedding dress designer, Daphne Ducasse. She creates bespoke and sustainable gowns using materials amassed over the years in her workshop or fabrics that are readily available in Mauritius. Leftover fabrics are repurposed to make one-of-a-kind accessories to minimise environmental impact.
Daphne grew up watching her grandmother creating beautiful wedding dresses, she loved seeing the joy on the brides-to-be faces when trying on the gown of their dreams.
“It was the craftsmanship, the delicate fabrics, the intimacy with each bride, and the endless possibilities to create something new each time that made me realise this is what I want to do with my life,” said Daphne.
After graduating from a fashion art and design school in Paris and Cracow, she launched her made-to-measure brand, Daphné D., that encapsulates her values to respect the art, artisans and the women who wear her clothes. Beyond carefully designing for low environmental impact, the core of the brand is for women, by women. By creating employability and valuing fair treatment for her team, she empowers the locals of Mauritius.
Repurposed wedding dresses
Gone are the days where wedding dresses are worn once and vacuumed-packed for the rest of days. Daphne also specialises in repurposing pre-loved bridal gowns as cocktail dresses to give these single use dresses new leases on life. Her bespoke gowns can also be designed and conceptualised from the start for easy assembly and disassembly into unique pieces that can be worn for a long time.
This exclusive collaboration between Daphné D. and LUX* Resorts & Hotels in Mauritius is dedicated to providing unique experiences for the discerning LUX* guests whilst affirming the group’s commitment in caring for the environment and the local community in which it operates.
Zero waste celebrations
Certified by The PLEDGE™ on Food Waste, a Singapore-based third-party audited certification and benchmarking system on food waste designed to improve organisations‘ bottom-line, LUX* Le Morne repackages leftover food to send to a neighbouring school for underprivileged children so they can improve their nutrition intake, hence improving their concentration during classes. Food that cannot be distributed are used as compost in the resort’s 30,000 square metre garden space.
Guests can also opt for a vegetarian or vegan menu from the Keen on Green concept, launched across the group this Veganuary, where produce are locally sourced and prepared with healthier methods.
Loving the rustic theme? The gardeners from LUX* Grand Gaube gather dried flowers and twigs from the resort’s grounds to build the floral arch for solemnisation or vow renewal ceremony. All floral bouquets are sourced from small florists to support local businesses. Flowers can be repurposed after the wedding by sending them to a nursing home or a non-profit organisation that the resorts work with to brighten up someone else’s day.
Signages and placards are lovingly hand crafted by LUX* Belle Mare’s Junk Art team using shells, dried flowers, driftwood or any recycled materials found on the island.
The newly opened LUX* Grand Baie offers chauffeur-driven wedding car in a fully electric BMW iX to and from Port Louis.
